The 200 + km of coastline stretching between Salina Cruz and Huatulco in
the state of Oaxaca in Mexico is one of the last great surf frontiers in
Mexico. This stretch of coastline receives some of the most consistent
swell in the world with 1 of the largest swell windows, picking up
powerful southern hemisphere generated swells. This area is dominated by
right-hand, sand bottom point breaks and jetty breaks, and some rocky
reefs, very few lefts are found here as this is the land of right-hand
point breaks.
The region is broken up into 2 specific areas, Northern Oaxaca and
Southern Oaxaca.
The Northern area is more tropical from around Huatulco up towards
Puerto Escondido. The surf breaks in this area typically feature morning
off shores switching to afternoon sea breezes with the occasional
evening glass off and year-round good surfing conditions and many of the
point breaks offer good wind protection in the afternoons and so
therefore don't blow out like the more exposed spots often do in the
late afternoon.
The most consistent season is from March - November when waves average
3-5 feet with bigger days in the 8-10 foot range. Rainy season runs from
May - October but most days begin sunny with late afternoon
thunderstorms. The winter season from November to March conditions are
typically smaller but still fun. Conditions during this time are very
dry and stiff morning off shores are the norm. Water temps range from 85
degrees March to November and about 75 degrees May - October and
generally wetsuits are not needed but maybe a good lycra for breezy
winter mornings.
The Southern area is much more arid and dry and begin halfway between
Huatulco and Salina Cruz. This area has strong, dominant N to NE wind
condition caused by the high pressure gradient between the Gulf of
Mexico to the North and the Pacific Ocean to the south. For much of the
year between October and April these winds will blow in excess of 30-40
knots and can easily blow out the surf. During the wet season between
May and September, the wind diminish down to around 10-15 knots, and the
wind direction is variable with offshore in the morning and then after
it rains, the winds will sometimes die off altogether and cause glassy
conditions again. There are between 12-16 different surf breaks in this
region, most of them remote and uncrowded with no more than 2-4 guy's
surfing on any given day and a good vehicle and knowledgeable guide are
a necessity to access the better hidden gems.
